2M+ Thais register for early voting before system crashes

Thai voters hoping to get an early start to next month’s election now have until noon Monday to register after the system crashed last night.

Election Commission chief Sawang Boonmee announced that by 5pm yesterday, 2,152,450 people had registered during the registration period between March 25 and Sunday. He said that registration would be extended past the deadline, and that the commission expected to receive more registrations online and through the mail, some of which had yet to arrive.

There were complaints among those signing up in Thailand and abroad to vote one week before Election Day after a surge in last-minute registrations last night after 8pm resulted in slow page loads and a nonresponsive application called Smart Vote.
