In 2004, a massive undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean with a Magnitude Width (MW) of 8.6 struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The quake caused the ocean floor to rise 40 metres in a matter of seconds, triggering a massive tsunami that wreaked havoc on coastal Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI). This devastating tsunami killed around 230,000 people, and many others were left destitute, picking up pieces of their lives from the rubble that remained in the tsunami’s wake.

The historic calamity led the governments to evaluate why certain areas were more impacted than the rest and revaluate their disaster risk reduction and preparedness measures.

Several field studies pointed to how mangrove forests played a critical role in saving human lives and property.
