Why did the PM dissolve parliament?

From what I understand, Prayut dissolving parliament is what has triggered the coming elections, meaning there’s a significant chance he won’t be re-elected. On top of that, the Thaksin and his family have one every one of the previous elections for the last decade, right? Yeah, there was a coup after each time, but why go through the trouble if you’re already PM?

And follow on question, why would the king sign the order to dissolve parliament? What’s his motivation?
