I speak decent Thai, and though I haven’t been in Thailand for over a decade, I assumed I could just tell any taxi driver where I wanted to go and they’d turn on their meter and take me to my destination. When I lived in Bangkok previously, I only ever had one driver forget to turn on his meter and when I pointed it out to him he apologized profusely.
I’ve been here for a week now, and every taxi I’ve tried to take has wanted to haggle on the fare before I get in. If I say “just turn in your meter” they say no.
Is it just because I’m in the Asoke area or is this the norm in Bangkok and Thailand in general?
