WHAT IS THE JAKHE?

***The Jakhe is a Thai zither-type instrument with 3 strings that sits on the floor. The body is made from a solid piece of the jackfruit tree which has been hollowed out, and then closed with a thin wooden board. The 3 strings are stretched over two bridges, which include 11 frets. The 1st and 2nd strings are generally made from silk or nylon, whilst the 3rd is made of wire. The strings are plucked with a plectrum which is tied to the index finger of the right hand. In the olden days, the Jakhe was often shaped like a crocodile, hence the name. But this shape has now been formalized- virtually out of recognition.***
