Viu CEO Janice Lee Drops The One-Size-Fits-All Approach To Overtake The Global Giants

Viu CEO Janice Lee ditched a one-size-fits-all approach to streaming content to win over 60 million monthly users across the region and beyond, gaining over global giants.

In the six years since launching Viu at billionaire Richard Li’s PCCW, CEO Janice Lee has overtaken some of the largest streaming companies on its main turf, including Netflix, despite the American company doubling down on Asia. With 7 million paying users at the end of 2021, up 70% from a year ago, Hong Kong-based Viu is the second-largest streaming service by paid subscribers in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, closing in on Disney Plus’ 7.2 million, according to Media Partners Asia (MPA). All told, Viu has amassed a viewer base of almost 60 million monthly active users across 16 markets, including the Middle East and South Africa.
