Understanding Thai family dynamics

I’m American and I’ve gone to Thailand a few times now to visit my Thai gf. At this point I’m pretty used to the helicopter parenting and her family always being around. As overbearing as it seems, I’ve tried to be respectful of it. One thing I’m struggling to understand though is when exactly in Thai family culture I’m accepted, meaning less of a guest and more a part of the family. Is that just a matter of building a relationship with them or something that happens at a specific point like an engagement? I imagine as a farang there might be different expectations or rules.
