Tuscaloosa restaurant closes location at UA campus

Surin of Thailand, a staple of midnight sushi lovers on the University of Alabama’s Strip since 2008, closed its doors permanently, according to a social media post from the business.

The Monday morning message read simply: “Surin of Thailand: Tuscaloosa is permanently closed. Thank you everyone for your support.”

Though no reason was given for the closure, it’s likely because COVID-19 pushed the owners to close their dining room in 2020, while Surin tried to exist solely on a takeout-only model, and removed sushi from the menu.

The location at 1402 University Blvd., sitting at the western end of he Strip, built its reputation on a late-night, budget-priced sushi menu. Lines frequently wrapped around the building on weekend nights.

Its closest competitor, Ruan Thai, located in the old Liberty Cafe location across University Boulevard, closed in February.
