Top National Thailand Stories From the Past Week: Early Voters Flock to Polling Stations in Thailand and more

Here is a look at the top NATIONAL Thailand stories, chosen by our Pattaya News/TPN National team, from the last week, Monday, May 1st, 2023, to Sunday, May 7th, 2023.

They are not in any particular level of importance but are listed in the order of date of publication.

Let’s get started and see what the top stories were!

  1. Thai officials reported in total that 25 tsunami towers sounded an alarm across Thailand at the same time, but there was thankfully no tsunami.

The DDPM has confirmed that the tsunami sirens at these towers have not malfunctioned. Signals sent to these towers were from satellites. The signals from satellites have to be pushed by technicians with double password security. It is unclear what went wrong, however.

2. More than 10,000 tourists are joining in the 5th Full Moon Party this year on Pha Ngan Island.

More than 20,000 tourists joined the 5th Full Moon Party of 2023 on Pha Ngan Island which has generated at least 500 million baht.

Happy Full Moon Party, which seems to get busier every month!

3. The spread of COVID-19 is no longer a worldwide public health emergency, the World Health Organization said Friday, May 5th, 2023 at night time in Bangkok, Thailand.

For over a year, the pandemic has been on a decreasing trend with population immunity increasing from vaccination and infection, mortality decreasing, and the pressure on health systems easing, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a media press conference in Geneva.

4. A body similar to that of a foreigner was found floating near Pha Ngan Island in Surat Thani.

The body is still being identified and it is still not clear if it is a foreigner.

5. Early Voters Flock to Polling Stations in Thailand.

The actual election is next weekend when the majority of the public will vote, May 14th. Like this weekend, an alcohol sales ban will be in effect from 6PM on May 13th to 6PM on May 14th nationwide in Thailand per Thai election laws.

And, that is all for this week. Thank you as always for reading the Pattaya News/TPN News!
