Tokyo Olympics flavor carries torch for Bangkok parlor owner’s uncle

The owner of a popular Japanese ice cream parlor famous for drawing long lines has launched a flavor dedicated to the Olympics – and his late uncle.

Shintaro Nakajima, owner of Rintaro, had the Tokyo Olympics on his calendar for a long time. He and uncle intended to watch the sporting action together in Japan, but those plans changed last year when the games were delayed, and his uncle died.

Nakajima is keeping their dream alive as only he can: by creating a special Tokyo Olympics gelato dedicated to his late uncle. It’s tiramisu added with bananas, Nakajima said.

“I wanted to make this flavor to fulfill our wishes, [because] I made a promise to watch the events with him,” Nakajima said.
