Tipping suggestions …. taxis, restaurants, cafes etc.

Hi, just moved here after 15 years in the US so fully indoctrinated into tipping every single person for everything. What’s normal here, what’s expected, what’s not? I remember in Japan years ago it was considered rude to tip. I got a haircut today and the hairdresser stood near the recpetion where I was paying after and I wasn’t sure if she was expecting a tip or not. Taxis, cafes and restaurants are my daily uses. Thanks.
