The ancient city of Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 by Ramathibodi I. For over four centuries, the city of Ayutthaya served as the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom (present-day Thailand), and with time, flourished as a powerful and cosmopolitan trading hub. The city’s strategic location along the Chao Phraya River definitely facilitated maritime trade and cultural exchanges.

The ancient city of Ayutthaya is named after Ayodhya, the birthplace of Rama, establishing a connection to Hinduism and the Ramayana. King Ramathibodi, the first ruler of Ayutthaya, named the city, showcasing the influence of the Ramayana on the region’s culture. Subsequent kings, including those of the Chakri dynasty, adopted the name Rama, further solidifying the connection to Lord Ram.
What makes Ayutthaya fascinating is the fact that here we can see that the Ramayana, which was introduced to Southeast Asia by Buddhist missionaries, was adapted into the Thai version known as Ramakien. Present day influence
For the upcoming consecration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, soil has been brought from Ayutthaya. This further strengthens the bond between Thailand’s Ayutthaya and India’s Ayodhya.
