The Laos-Korea silkworm project ends poorly, defeated by the weather

Vientiane, March 8 (Vientiane Times/ANN): A project to test the viability of a Lao-Korean silkworm hybrid species has been conducted in an attempt to increase the quality of silk produced in Laos and boost output.

However, it was found that weather conditions in Laos did not favour the development of the species and the project has now ended.

An official from the Horticulture Research Centre in Vientiane, who did not wish to be named, told Vientiane Times that to begin with the trial went well and the results obtained from Lao-Korean studies from 2016-2018 showed promise.

“But as time passed the silkworms failed to develop and did not reach the desired size, due to the weather. Laos is a hot country and the prevailing conditions proved to be unsuitable for this type of hybrid silkworm, ” he…
