Thailand’s nuclear power debate heats up as U.S., China build SMRs


BANGKOK — Advances in nuclear power have added fuel to Thailand’s debate on tapping the energy source, potentially creating opportunities for U.S. and Chinese companies pushing reactor designs touted as safer.

Nuclear energy is necessary for future economic growth, Dhanin Chearavanont, senior chairman of leading Thai conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group, told Thai and Chinese executives at a business forum here in late June.
