Thailand’s AFC Asian Cup 2023: Broadcasting Rights Uncertain

Thailand’s AFC Asian Cup 2023 Broadcast Rights Hang in Balance Amid Negotiation Issues

The broadcasting of the Thai national team’s matches in the AFC Asian Cup 2023 hangs in the balance as the Football Federation of Thailand (FFT) is not responsible for the live coverage. This situation creates a cloud of uncertainty over whether domestic broadcasters can negotiate successfully with the rights holder.

Government Intervention

In reaction to this development, the Thai government has called on the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) to address the broadcasting issue. However, the SAT has cited financial constraints as a significant hurdle and is actively seeking support from businesses and broadcasters.

Reluctance from Thai Broadcasters

Thai broadcasters, on the other hand, are reluctant to purchase the rights, fearing a lack of profitability due to the Thai team’s challenging group stage. Their apprehension is further fueled by the absence of key players such as Chanathip Songkrasin, Teerasil Dangda, and Ekanit Panya. This has led to concerns that Thailand may be eliminated early from the tournament, thus affecting the broadcasters’ return on investment.

Financial Constraints and Negotiation Issues

The SAT’s plan to buy rights exclusively for Thailand’s group stage games is unlikely to be accepted by the AFC. This complication adds another layer of difficulty to the already complex negotiations. The upcoming 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, starting on January 12 in Qatar, will feature 24 teams in six groups. With Vietnam seated in group D alongside Japan, Iraq, and Indonesia, the stage is set for a captivating tournament if the broadcasting issue can be resolved timely.
