Thailand to ban dining inside restaurants

Thailand has decided to ban dining inside restaurants due to a recent surge in coronavirus infections caused by the British variant.

The Thai government says it will impose the ban from Saturday in six regions, including capital Bangkok, where the virus is spreading rapidly.

The country recorded 1,583 new cases on Friday. The daily figure was as low as 26 on April 1.

Under the new restrictions, restaurants will only be allowed to provide takeout and delivery services.

Further economic pressure on the restaurant business is expected. Restaurants in Bangkok have already been banned from serving alcohol.
