Thailand are in danger of going down to the Davis Cup World Group 3 after losing 2-0 to Latvia on the first day of their World Group 2 play-off tie yesterday.
In the first singles match, world No.742 Robert Strombachs defeated world No.1,302 Kasidit Samrej 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4 to give Latvia a 1-0 lead over the hosts at the National Tennis Centre in Muang Thong Thani.
In the second singles, world No.324 Ernests Gulbis comfortably beat Thailand’s Yuttana Charoenphon 6-4, 6-2.
“It is not yet over — we still have three matches to play,” said Thailand captain Paradorn Srichaphan, a former top-10 player in the world.
