Thailand secure first gold at Hanoi

Thai pencak silat athletes Sobri Cheni, Abdulkarim Koolee and Abdulrahim Sidek celebrate winning gold in the men’s seni regu at the SEA Games in Hanoi on Wednesday.

The 31st SEA Games in Vietnam officially start on Thursday as Thailand aim to win 112 gold medals.

The Kingdom got their first gold on Wednesday with success in pencak silat.

Sobri Cheni, Abdulkarim Koolee and Abdulrahim Sidek stunned Indonesia, the birthplace of the martial art, in the final of the men’s seni (artistic) regu (team/trio).

The Thais scored 9.960 points and the Indonesians 9.945.

The Thai athletes said they had trained together for more than one year.
