As the air pollution in most parts of Thailand is deteriorating, Thailand will reduce its standard safety level of air pollution from an average of 50 microns to 37.5 microns from June 1st.
The move will help the Pollution Control Department (PCD) manage air pollution more effectively after PM2.5 dust levels in 43 provinces, including Bangkok, exceeded the safe limit of 50 micrograms per cubic meter on Friday, February 3rd, the PCD reported.
The PCD has urged employers to allow their staff to work from home and for motorists to reduce the use of personal cars, while construction sites have been told to reduce activities.
Waste burning in open areas, which largely contributes to pollution, is now prohibited.
Poor air circulation and burning of farm waste and garbage tend to lead to a rise in PM2.5 levels, according to the PCD. On normal days, PM2.5 levels are 35 microns, but can reach 60 microns during stagnant air conditions and can soar up to 90 microns with burning activities.
Students are advised to wear face masks and stay indoors at schools to protect themselves instead of staying home, which might put a burden on parents.
