Thailand Eyes Global Stage with ‘Korat Expo 2029’ Horticultural Bid, Aiming for 4M Visitors

Thailand is stepping onto the global stage with its bid to host the 2029 International Horticultural Expo, a move that could transform Nakhon Ratchasima into a world focal point for discussions on sustainability and environmental balance. Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Kanchana Patarachoke announced the country’s ambition to welcome up to 4 million visitors during the four-month event, scheduled from November 10, 2029, to February 28, 2030. This initiative, dubbed ‘Korat Expo 2029’, seeks to underline the intricate relationship between human advancement and environmental preservation.

Key Highlights of Thailand’s Bid

Thailand’s proposal to host the 25th edition of this prestigious global event in Nakhon Ratchasima is not just about showcasing the country’s agricultural prowess. It’s an opportunity to spotlight its commitment to sustainable food production, green community development, and the enhancement of nature, culture, and livelihood connections. The city, recognized as a Triple Crown City by UNESCO for its geological heritage sites, including Dong Phaya Yen Forest, Sakae Rat Biosphere Reserve, and Korat Geopark, is positioned as an ideal MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) host city with immense potential.

Implications for Thailand and the World

If successful, the Korat Expo 2029 could have far-reaching implications for Thailand and the global community. Beyond drawing 2.6 to 4 million visitors, the event is poised to create over 36,000 jobs and generate an estimated 18.9 billion baht in additional income. The expo’s focus on sustainable agricultural and food production advancements could set new benchmarks for environmental stewardship, influencing global practices and fostering a deeper connection between nature and humanity.

The Path to Selection

The decision on the 2029 expo host will be made during a general meeting of the International Horticultural Congress in Doha, Qatar, from March 3-7. With Thailand currently standing as the sole registered candidate, the anticipation is high. However, the selection hinges on a voting system by 32 member countries, emphasizing that despite being the only bidder, Thailand’s selection is not guaranteed without meeting the comprehensive qualifications set by the International Horticultural Congress.

The bid for hosting ‘Korat Expo 2029’ is a bold step towards showcasing Thailand’s capabilities on the international stage. It represents a unique convergence of agricultural heritage, environmental sustainability, and economic development. As the world awaits the decision from Doha, the potential for Thailand to lead by example in harmonizing human development with environmental protection remains a compelling narrative, underscoring the significance of this global event not just for Thailand, but for the future of our planet.
