BANGKOK, April 26 (Xinhua) — Thailand on Monday confirmed 2,048 new COVID-19 cases and eight fatalities, according to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokeswoman Apisamai Srirangsan.
Some 2,038 of the new cases were domestic infections while 10 others were imported cases, Apisamai told a press conference.
Of these cases, 901 were in the capital Bangkok, the epicenter of the new wave of outbreak.
The cases brought the total caseload to 57,508, with 148 deaths so far, according to Apisamai.
To stem the spread of COVID-19, the Thai government has ordered the closure of schools, entertainment venues and gyms, while a fine of up to 20,000 baht (about 636 U.S. dollars) had been introduced for not wearing face masks in public places in 48 provinces, according to the CCSA.
