Thailand: As of May 13, authorities investigating May 12 blast, arson incidents in Yala, Narathiwatt, Pattani provinces

Event

As of May 13, authorities are investigating a deadly explosion and approximately 20 arson incidents that occurred in Yala, Narathiwatt, and Pattani provinces May 12. The bomb explosion occurred in Bannang Sata district, killing one security force member and wounding three more. The arson attacks occurred in multiple districts across Narathiwatt and Pattani provinces; militants set fire to approximately 20 mobile phone towers.

Officials will likely maintain heightened security measures, including deploying additional personnel, especially given that general elections are scheduled for May. 14. Additional attacks may occur in the Deep South in the coming days, possibly targeting polling stations or election-related events.

Context

The May 12 explosions and arson incidents are almost certainly coordinated attacks by separatists, highlighting that insurgent activity remains a threat in the Deep South, which includes Narathiwat, Pattani, Songkhla, and Yala provinces. While roadside shootings and bombings are the most common type of attacks in the Deep South, separatist organizations have staged coordinated attacks in several cities in the region in the past. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the May 12 attacks, separatist armed organizations like Barisan Revolusi National (BRN) are active in the area.

Advice

Avoid the affected areas until authorities give the all-clear. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions nearby the incident sites. Heed all security and transport advisories from the authorities.
