Thai rock-pop star Phum Viphurit to make rare Houston appearance

It’s not every day that a Thai indie pop-rock star comes to Houston.

But that’s what’s happening Aug. 24 when Thailand’s Phum Viphurit, who blends neo-soul-influenced vocals with a jazzy rock groove, headlines the House of Blues. Viphurit, who sings in English, crafts infectious pop that has found a global audience, with tours throughout Asia, Europe and North America under his belt.

BEYOND K-POP: These Asian and Asian-American indie-rock acts, from Japanese Breakfast to Mitski, are making global waves.

The singer-songwriter-guitarist — who was born in Bangkok, raised in New Zealand and then returned to Thailand to attend collage — represents his pan-Pacific roots with a style that can appeal to a wide audience.
