Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said today, February 3rd, that Thailand should amend the law to legalize e-cigarettes to reflect the lives of people in many developed countries.
Chaiwut mentioned a recent police extortion case involving a visiting Taiwanese actress, Charlene An, who was extorted 27,000 baht for carrying a vaping device.
He said it is about time to legalize e-cigarettes in Thailand because the device is already like a way of life for many people in developed countries, such as America, Japan, or even Thailand’s neighboring countries like Singapore and Malaysia.
The minister continued that since e-cigarettes are still illegal, they are often smuggled into the country and thus give police officers opportunities to demand bribes and extort money from people.
He also stated that he supports the use of e-cigarettes rather than normal cigarettes because they are less harmful to the user’s health.
Finally, he pointed out that many people have asked why marijuana is now decriminalized and allowed but vaping and shisha continued to be outlawed and illegal and often used to extort and fine foreign tourists. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-===-=-=-=–=–=–=–==-
