At 12:20 PM, on January 12th, 2024, Mr. Chaichana Dejdecho, the chairman of the Parliament’s Committee on Police Affairs, gave a statement to Thai national media after an official visit to the Police General Hospital regarding Thaksin Shinawatra’s case who has received medical treatment beyond a 120-day limit.
Chaichana publicly revealed that the only patient who received long-term medical treatment since August 23rd, 2023, was Thaksin Shinawatra and other patients were on a day and evening basis. After consulting with relevant agencies regarding the regulatory framework of the police hospital, the committee was allowed to inspect the 14th floor to visit medical and detention processes, said Chaichana. However, the committee did not enter the hallway nor witness the presence of Thaksin in his private room as it was personal information according to the principles of medical ethics and privacy, remarked Chaichana.
“There were eight officers stationed on the 14th floor including two correction officers. During the visit, correction officers escorted the committee to study medical processes and it could be seen that patients received medical treatment and detention processes equally by correction officers,” revealed Chaichana. As for the matter of the period of Thaksin’s medical treatment, Chaichana stated that the committee preferred not to interfere with the work of medical expertise as today’s mission was to witness whether all patients received equal treatment or not. However, Chaichana questioned the Thai Department of Corrections as the committee previously requested relevant documentation regarding Thaksin’s case including guard shifts and medical expenses reported as using the rights of the National Health Security Office. As of press time, there was no response from the Thai Department of Corrections. Chaichana insisted that it was the Department of Corrections’ responsibility to inform the public whether Thaksin was actually in the Police General Hospital or not. Additionally, Chaichana remarked that the medical facility where Thaksin received medical treatment had little to no CCTV functions and requested the Thai Prime Minister to spare budgets for maintenance as it was allegedly broken before Thaksin first was administered.
