Surprise election win clouds future of Thailand’s cannabis industry

Before Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis, possession could land you 15 years in jail.

That punishment could even be considered lenient compared to other countries in the region, like Cambodia, Indonesia and Singapore, where possession can lead to life in prison or even the death penalty.

Ahead of the new rules taking effect on June 9, 2022, the Thai government celebrated by distributing one million free cannabis plants across the country, and the burgeoning industry was forecast to be worth as much as 42.9 billion baht, or about $1.6 billion, by 2025.
