Stop topping the ball with this pretty simple exercise

A large part of topping can be traced to the lack of confidence and a failure to relax sufficiently during the shot.

This can cause your muscles to tighten up just enough to alter the length of your swing.

Topping the ball does not necessarily imply that there is a basic fault in your technique, and there is no obvious and simple way of solving this problem.

All you can hope to do is put in as much practice as possible — and try an extra one or two practice swings before you step up to strike the ball.

The best exercise is to stand with the club-head just touching the grass.

Move it backwards and forwards using a small swing and then build this exercise up to a full swing.

All the time you should be able to hear the club brushing over the top of the grass.

Having established this length of swing, you should hopefully stop topping the ball.
