Staring in Thai culture. Is this a normal experience?

Visited last August. Had a blast and I’m visiting again in Feb.

From the moment I landed I noticed alot staring and long glances towards me in Thailand. Especially at airports. Even in Bangkok where there’s heaps of farrangs around. Even in real touristy spots people stare abit more than you’d expect – which goes against the common argument of “Its because you’re foreigner/white skinned etc.

The glances and stares came mostly from younger regular Thai women and older folks on the street. I’m *not* talking about massage girls or freelancers on the street wanting your money.

I remember one late afternoon walking through Rommaninat Park (past the outdoor gym area) and most people gave me an extended look.

Probably quite a handful of interesting staring scenarios I could discuss but it’s quite alot to list here.

I hardly receive any stares or long glances in my home country in Australia. We’re more the quite look and go kind of people. Even towards foreigners in Australia, people don’t really take a second glance unless they’re extremely tall (6’7+), albino, Sudanese African, got a real odd dress sense or they’re really sexy (especially in provocative clothing) as would happen in general.

I don’t think I’m that overly distinctive compared to rest of the foreigners. I’m 26m, white, skin faded undercut with a lifted top style (I got compliments all the time in Australia and Thailand), short faded beard. My dress sense is pretty normal with tshirts and tapered fitting pants. Not that alot of it matters really but it gives you an idea of what they’re looking at.

I wanna at least know from a **Thai** perspective more so than just a foreigners point of view.
