Police in Sakon Nakhon’s Phang Khon district recovered two large steel boxes from a pond, each containing a lifeless body, on Tuesday, January 9th.
The bodies were identified as Prayat Detphummee, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter, Piangpen.
The victims’ bodies were discovered concealed in locked steel boxes submerged in a pond. The grim revelation came after concerned residents in Ban Sang Khui reported the sudden disappearance of two large steel boxes that were previously seen beside the pond.
Authorities, responding to the tip-off, found the brand-new boxes submerged in the water around 1 AM on Tuesday morning. The containers were secured with steel chains, and upon opening, each was revealed to contain a lifeless body.
At the scene, police apprehended a 35-year-old man, only identified as Waroot. He reportedly behaved erratically, shouting and speaking incoherently. Further investigations revealed that Waroot is the son of Prayat and the elder brother of Piangpen.
According to the Thai media, the family was originally from the Sawang Daen Din district. Waroot, the suspect, had purchased the two large steel boxes from a local metal worker on November 25th, 2023, for 12,000 baht. He allegedly informed the seller that he intended to use the containers for storing fishing equipment.
As of press time, Waroot has been found to have down syndrome. Initial interrogation indicated that prior to the incident, he had an argument with his father. This led him to reportedly lure his father and younger sister to enter the steel boxes. Subsequently, he closed and secured the boxes with chains before pushing them into the water.
The investigation into the suspect’s motives is ongoing, and the police will continue to question and evaluate his mental state.
