  • Officials said the elephants were trying to help a calf who was stuck in the raging waters and also died.
  • The elephants were at a waterfall called Haew Narok, or Hell’s Abyss.
  • Eight elephants died in a similar incident several years ago.

Five adult elephants are dead in Thailand after trying to reach a calf, who also died after being swept over a waterfall in raging water from heavy rains.

“The baby fell and the other five were trying to help, but they fell into the waterfall, too,” Khao Yai National Park director Kanchit Srinoppawan told the New York Times.

The 1,300-mile square park is located in central Thailand and is home to about 170 wild elephants. The dead elephants were discovered near a waterfall called Haew Narok, or Hell’s Abyss.
