Setting up a BOI without a lawyer…?

I met a lawyer that was recommended by an acquaintance in another company and he suggested that I setup a BOI company because I work online and could qualify under the software category. I’ve already got several online projects, so I could create some kind of software that integrates with my current projects in order to get a BOI company which would handle my visa situation long-term as well as give me additional benefits.

Much to my surprise on my digital meeting today my lawyer, who managed nearly all of the paperwork, had filled out an application form that I haven’t seen before on my behalf and it was a fucking mess.

For example it was listed that I was going to have 8 employees but then he listed that for hardware for the company we’d only be purchasing 4 computers. The BOI officer obviously asked how the additional 4 employees are going to work when there are 4 laptops between 8 people. One employee is listed other “misc general” category, so she asked what they were going to do.

For both questions I felt I had to quickly make something up, which I think I did an OK job of. Much to my surprise, the BOI officer was surprisingly quite OK with everything, so like… Do people just setup companies and give random hiring & revenue forecasts that are completely made up and then still get approved?

My lawyer said to me that I don’t have to worry so much, that once I get the BOI license I’m pretty much in the clear even if I don’t end up hiring 8 employees… I didn’t even *know* that I was going to hire 8 employees! I was thinking 3-4 to start, MAX. I already need to hire an additional person in my business as it stands now, and I could use with a part-time personal assistant that I could extend to full-time too, so that’s 2 down, but no way I’d hit 8 anytime soon I think..

I’m kind of in shock. Like I just went into this meeting with my lawyer saying to prepare for one thing, then the officer reviewed my application with me present, and I had to make up answers to my employees and revenue forecasts.. Luckily she said I can send an Email to her later detailing this in a separate document.

Should I just make a BOI or a company without a lawyer or a different lawyer? Or is everything here really such a mess that I should just proceed and get the BOI license and then I’ll be clear long-term? It seemed like everything was normal for her, like I just acted confident and smiled and she’s like “yeah cool just a small explanation in writing is fine and then you’ll be good to proceed.”

Business out here is a different thing than what I’m used to.. Please advice me haha.
