Scammers have seized the opportunity of the upcoming Chinese New Year by sending links via SMS, Line and Facebook, claiming that by simply clicking on the link, people can claim a substantial amount of Angpao money, a traditional gift at this time of year, usually offered in a red envelope.
According to the Thai cyber police’s Facebook page, after clicking the link attached to the message, the recipient will be prompted to complete a form with their personal and financial information. The scammers will then use this information for illegal activities. Some victims may be enticed to upload applications that will steal money from their bank accounts if they agree to.
