San Antonio signs once included Playland Park, Mexican Manhattan

Live in San Antonio long enough and you’ll notice some roadside signs and statuary look just like home. The giant cowboy boots outside North Star Mall. The show-stealing marquee at the Majestic Theatre. The shimmering Pegasus atop the former Mobil gas station off Broadway and Austin Highway. 

But what about those beloved, bygone markers that now stand only in our memories?

Once upon a busy street, these works of shimmering neon and smiling mascots highlighted all sorts of puro San Antonio products and experiences. Grocery stores not named H-E-B. Downtown enchiladas that dripped off the plate. Even adult films and burlesque shows just peeping distance from one of the city’s most historic movie theaters.

Here are some of those memorable signs that once dotted San Antonio through the 20th century.
