Samui Progress

So, the last time I was on Samui was in 1996. We stayed in a bamboo hut on Chaweng Beach at a place called Jah Dub. One of the guys rowed out to the shrimpers and made the most amazing Tom Kha Gung with coconuts from the trees on the property for breakfast.

I am a lot older now, and I wasn’t exactly looking to re-create that experience — I like air conditioning (and windows!) — but I also wasn’t looking to be on the fourth floor of a hotel right across from the beach and still needing to walk a few blocks through an urban area to get to it, because there’s no public access right here.

I have two more nights in this hotel, and I have been combing Agoda search results, but I don’t feel confident about booking anything. Does anyone have any suggestions for a specific place or a general area on Samui that is a little less McDonald’s than Chaweng? (I am traveling with my 16-year-old nephew, and we did eat at McDonald’s last night, but he swears he doesn’t need to do that again.)

Thanks!

(Edited to specify that I am currently on Chaweng Beach.)
