Public Transport in Bangkok

Hi, am in Bangkok for 20 days. I really want to get around using public transportation. Is there an app or something I should know about? How good is the public transportation system here?

I know apps like bolt and grab are there, it will be expensive.

I tried going to a place in the city via bus ended up waiting for a bus called 511 NGV which never showed up and ended up taking a grab. While there was buses with the number 511, I got on it but the stop that I needed was not a part of that bus route.

I used google maps to find the bus number.
