A government spokesman reveals that the Prime Minister is pleased that “Songkran” is included in the tentative list that UNESCO is preparing to consider for inclusion. It is the fourth intangible cultural heritage of Thailand.
On January 28, Mr. Anucha Burapachaisri, Deputy Secretary-General to the Prime Minister for Political Affairs Acting as a spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed that General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, thanked UNESCO for allowing “Songkran in Thailand, traditional Thai New Year festival” to enter the list. The preliminary name to be considered at the meeting at the end of 2023 as the 4th Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Thailand.
Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson added that It is the pride of Thai people in the event that UNESCO has approved the “Songkran Festival” to be included in the tentative list for consideration at the meeting, which will be held at the end of 2023. Make Songkran traditions the fourth Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Thailand after Khon (registered in 2018), Thai massage (registered in 2019) and Nora (registered in 2021).
Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) is a category in intangible culture, meaning practices, expressions, knowledge, skills, as well as tools, objects, artifacts, and cultural areas. There are many other items for consideration for registration with UNESCO.
