Pattaya police have arrested a 41-year-old Thai man, identified only as Mr. Tip, in connection with the attempted rape and robbery of a 29-year-old Chinese tourist on February 20th, 2024.
According to authorities, Mr. Tip offered to drive the Chinese woman (name withheld) to Pattaya when he diverted from the route and took her to a secluded wooded area near the Chonburi Highway. There, Mr. Tip allegedly attempted to unsuccessfully assault and rape the victim before binding her hands and feet, stealing her belongings, and setting fire to the surrounding area, hoping to destroy the evidence.
The victim reportedly lost 15,000 baht and 1,500 Yuan (around 7,589 baht) in cash during the incident.
Following the attack, Pattaya police launched an investigation using surveillance footage from the area. This led them to identify and apprehend Mr. Tip at his residence in Rayong province on February 20th. During initial questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to the attempted rape, robbery, and arson charges.
Authorities have impounded the motorcycle used in the crime, a Yamaha Finn, found abandoned near a gas station on Sukhumvit Bangna-Trad Road. Additionally, fingerprint analysis and DNA testing are underway to strengthen the case against Mr. Tip.
Pattaya police are also investigating if Mr. Tip was involved in a similar incident targeting a female caddie on the 331 Highway in June last year.
