Phuket continues to draw Russian tourists, investors

n the first half of 2003, the number of Russian tourists visiting Thailand increased by a staggering 1,000% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, many Russians have been investing in Thailand, particularly in real estate, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Purchases of villas have risen by 338% this year alone, more than half of them snapped up by Russians. This trend has resulted in the opening of many Russian-friendly establishments, such as Russian-style bathhouses (“banyas”) and restaurants serving traditional Russian dishes like borscht soup alongside Thai cuisine, the Phuket Tourist Association reports.

The local airport and businesses have also adapted, with signs and announcements now made in the Russian language, and the availability of Russian-friendly services and amenities has increased.
