PERSONAL FINANCE/JOHN NINFO:Holiday spending projections

Before we get to some interesting reports and projections about spending for the upcoming holidays, let’s revisit a few important issues that can affect some of our personal finances.

First, we have been tracking the post-presidential-election stock market. On Nov. 16, the Dow hit an all-time high of 29,950. It is hard to say how much the results of the election factored into this record high, as opposed to the great news that there are two very promising vaccines that will soon to be available. As we have all said, this is the key to fully opening up the economy. Nevertheless, I am expecting roller coaster-like volatility in the future.

Second, mortgage rates are going up after hitting record lows during the pandemic, as those vaccines promise that there will be increased economic activity and, eventually, a full reopening. That said, it still may be a good time to buy or refinance…
