Several Pattaya beach side resorts, bars, and hotels benefited from the arrival of crew members of the US Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, said Thanet Suparashusrangsi, chairman of the Tourism Industry Council of Chonburi Province.
The USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, led by the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, has been engaged in an extensive 11-month patrol mission within the US 7th Fleet area of operations since November of last year. Recently, the group has completed joint drills with Japan and South Korea, and has also passed through disputed parts of the South China Sea without any problems.
The carrier then joined the 190th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the United States from April 24th-29th. Some of the 5,000 crew members of the aircraft carrier also visited Pattaya to take a break, according to Thanet.
Thanet told The Pattaya News that several hotels located on the Pattaya beachfront had benefited from the arrival of the US military. The arrival created quite a buzz around Beach Road and helped boost tourism during April 24th-28th.
The USS Nimitz is as tall as a 23-storey building and as wide as four football fields. It arrived with the Ticondegoral-class guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, the Arleigh Bruke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Decatur and USS Wayne E Mayor and a squadron of F/A-18 combat aircraft.
Walking Street in particular was very busy with US military members on a break all last week.
