Padang Bessar boarder crossing / Malaysia land border requirements

Hi all.

Shortly I will be making a visa run south to Malaysia to spend a few weeks in Kuala Lumpur while I attempt to recieve a 60 day tourist visa to return to Thailand without the possibility of being turned away at the border. I haven’t receive a warning or anything thus far but am anxious to attempt another visa exemption…

I will take the overnight sleeper from Chumphon to Padang Bessar, from there I intend to continue to Kuala Lumpur.

Are there any requirements for an American Passport holder? Do I need to fill anything out ahead of time, or apply for anything? Will they require me to have a flight out of the country?

Does anyone have any pertinent tips or advice? Is immigration straightforward?
