Not a bad taster, now for the real thing at Euro 2020

The opening skirmishes of Euro 2020 are done and dusted without any major surprises but plenty of drama.

As in most tournaments, the group stages serve more as an aperitif, preparing us for what could be a substantial main course with many of the world’s best teams in action.

Among the more tasty items on the menu in the coming week are Belgium v Portugal (Sun), Croatia v Spain (Mon) and England v Germany (Tue).

The fixture that really catches the eye is that between the old foes, England and Germany at Wembley.

The teams have been involved in memorable clashes over the years, going back to 1966 when England triumphed over West Germany in the World Cup final.

One game England manager Southgate will want to forget is the Euro 96 semi-final when Germany edged England and Southgate missed a penalty.
