Motty, the voice of football for five decades

The recent death of legendary English football commentator John Motson at the age of 77 prompted many tributes from fans, players and broadcasters alike.

For 50 years, “Motty” had been the voice of football on the BBC and a popular one too.

In plain statistics, he covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and an astonishing 29 FA Cup finals.

But you cannot sum up his contribution to football in mere statistics. It was much more than that. It was clear he had a passion for the game.

Football commentating is quite an art, but often a maligned profession.

The main reason for this negative viewpoint is that most of us reckon we understand the game better than the commentators.

The BBC’s Barry Davies once said: “One man’s commentary is another man’s pain in the backside.”

But Motty rose above that.
