Motorcycles without the green registration book – worth the hassle?

I’ve been looking for a very specific motorcycle model that isn’t that common, and found one for sale. The price is a lot less than usual for this model, because it’s missing the green book (the registration book). Has anyone ever gone through the process of trying to do the registration in this situation? If so, how do you prove that it’s not stolen and that it’s legitimate if it doesn’t have the book?
