Mass fish deaths leave farmers in deep trouble

KANCHANABURI: More than 100 tonnes of fish raised in baskets in the reservoir of Vachiralongkorn Dam in Thong Pha Phum district have died from an unknown reason, causing fish farmers to suffer about 15 million baht damage.

About 30 farmers who raise the fish, pla kod khang (Hemibagrus wyckioides), in about 100 baskets altogether in the dam reservoir at Pilokki village said the fish began to die about four days ago. The cause of the fish death was still not known.

When the fish began to die, they tried to save them by giving oxygen and moving the baskets further into the middle of the reservoir but to no avail.

The fish, which weighed 3-8 kilogrammes each, in every basket died. The farmers had to take them out of the water onto the bank and pile them up along the shoreline for a distance of about one kilometre.

The dead fish had sent a bad smell all over the area….
