Man held over B4.5m gold heist

A thief who made off with gold necklaces worth about 4.5 million baht in Nakhon Ratchasima on Tuesday was apprehended in Pattaya yesterday.

Kittipong Phaethaisong, 28, was arrested in the resort city and taken back to the northeastern province for questioning, said Pol Lt Gen Somprasong Yenthuam, commander of Provincial Police Region 3.

On Tuesday, Mr Kittipong allegedly robbed the Yaowarat Krungthep gold shop at the Lotus hypermarket in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Muang district and made off with 51 gold necklaces, each one 3-baht in weight, worth about 4.5 million baht.

The items were stolen in just 20 seconds.

Police tracked the suspect using security camera footage at the hypermarket and closed-circuit television cameras along the route where he fled on a motorcycle without a licence plate.

Police did not say why he went to Pattaya.
