A man reportedly killed four stray dogs at Kantang Stadium in Trang province in the southern part of Thailand on Monday, May 8. The dog killer in question brutally slashed each dog and left their dead bodies on a road causing outrage among locals and animal rights activists.
A 43 year old local man, Apichart Leeasa, who encountered the dead stray dogs, reported the issue to the media and Kantang Municipality. According to Apichart, the stray dogs were about one year old and suffered fatal stab wounds to their bodies. He found them lying dead in a pool of blood.
A damaged headlamp and grille of a pickup were also found at the scene, leading Apichart to believe that the dog killer drove a pickup. In an interview with the news website 77 Kaoded, Apichart expressed his sadness over the incident and revealed that over 100 stray dogs were wandering around in the area. He stated that the dogs did not do anything wrong and did not deserve to die.
The leader of Kantang Municipality’s public health department, Sakda Maneesin, investigated the scene and questioned locals living nearby the stadium about the incident. According to eyewitnesses, a man on a motorcycle visited the scene at around 5am on Monday. The man got off his motorcycle wielding a long knife and suddenly slashed the dogs.
Sakda speculated that the man may have been angered after crashing his pickup into a stray dog. He returned to the scene on his motorcycle and killed the four stray dogs in a fit of rage. Sakda stated that he had never witnessed such a brutal incident in the area before and assured him that the authorities would conduct a thorough investigation into the case.
However, the authorities admitted that they may not be able to punish the dog killer because the animals did not have owners. Sakda added that he would like to ask for cooperation from dog lovers to avoid feeding stray dogs because this helps them breed and increase in numbers. The local authorities revealed that they have been operating sterilization to control the stray dog population.
The incident has raised concerns about the welfare of stray dogs in the area. According to the report on 77 Kaoded, the stadium does not have CCTV cameras, and the witness did not dare to provide information to the officers as they were worried about their safety, saying that the suspect could murder them too.
