‘Low-class’ congee gets hi-so upgrade at Supanniga Eating Room

Feeling nostalgic for old-school khao tom kui (“low-class congee”) but you’re also kind of bougie? 

The Supanniga group’s new brand Ruay Mitr upgrades the old-school culinary tradition of boiled rice served with savory side dishes featuring premium ingredients not found at street stalls.

The name Ruay Mitr (ruay meaning “prosper” and mitr meaning “friends”) underscores the goal of bringing people together. The food, which uses traditional cooking techniques, emphasizes Thai-Chinese methods with a few creative twists.

It’s a far cry from the origins of the dish’s name, which was rooted in ethnic and class animus and used to refer to the Chinese patrons of the first congee joints.
