Complaints are piling up regarding the ongoing issue of traffic congestion on Pattaya’s iconic Walking Street, reportedly caused by taxi drivers monopolizing the road.
According to the complainants, taxi drivers are being blamed for traffic jams on Walking Street as they block the street while waiting for customers. The Pattaya News notes that the street is closed to vehicle traffic during prime time evening hours but the major concern is when the road reopens at night and entertainment venues are closing.
Lines of taxis on Pattaya’s popular tourist thoroughfare lead to inconvenience for both motorists and pedestrians. The complainants revealed that the drivers also act “unfriendly” when asked to move their vehicles, often responding with harsh language and, in some cases, even aggressive behavior, according to the complainants.
Local resident Mr. Tom (a pseudonym used for anonymity) described the situation as “unbearable.” He stated that taxi drivers often park haphazardly, disrupt traffic flow, and create a daily obstacle for road users. “They act as if they own Walking Street. They also refuse to acknowledge the inconvenience they cause,” Mr. Tom told the local media.
The community in the area is frustrated by the alleged lack of action from authorities despite mounting complaints. They urge officials to visit Walking Street and witness the problem firsthand to understand the severity of the situation.
“We need urgent solutions to address this issue,” Mr. Tom said. “Walking Street is a vital part of Pattaya’s tourism industry, and the current situation is detrimental to both residents and visitors.”
