Long term renting: Is ‘Farang pricing’ a thing

Hi all,
I’ve very recently arrived in Chaing Mai and I’m interested in setting up a year round apartment here which I’ll use for some of the year while continuing to explore the rest of Asia.

As I’m very clearly a farang (British accent, white skin, only speak English, terrible at understanding accents), I’m conscious that in some parts of the world, people aren’t going to offer me a fair deal if I go around looking myself. I’m too new to Thailand to know if this is one of those places so I was hoping you could fill me in on what to expect. Is this one of those places where it may be worth hiring a multilingual local to go around negotiating deals and then swoop in at the end once the pricing is agreed?
